Their wealth was used to build complex civilizations that include large cities with temple complexes that honored religious beliefs. Portuguese explorers opened the region to trade and then conquest and colonization by European powers. Britain, Spain, France, the Netherlands, and the United States took control of islands and their resources. European colonization later led to conflict as peoples in the region struggled to regain independence.
