How are satellites used?
- Sending signals through phone calls, television, and bring cable and network programming to stations
- GPS and tracking someone's location
- Predicting weather and climate of the Earth
- Taking pictures of Earth, other planets, the sun, etc.
- Measure gases in the atmosphere such as carbon dioxide
- Collect data from all over the solar system and universe for scientific research and technological development.
- Detect launches or detonations that may act as a threat to us
- Keep track of transactions, card activity, etc.
- Communication in case of an emergency or natural disaster occurrence when other systems are down.
NASA’s Project that put a man on the moon.
What is Project Apollo?
Name the three different types of space probes.
1. Lander
2. Orbiter
3. Flyby
BONUS: Rover
The three things necessary for life on Earth.
- A source of energy
- Organic molecules
- Liquid water
If you were in charge of the space program, what destination would you choose for a future outpost in space? Give two reasons why.
The moon and Mars.
Creating a living environment that supports the physical and mental well-being of astronauts.
- Developing efficient designs
- Developing efficient use of space
- Developing lighting systems
- Developing temperature control mechanisms.
Briefly describe the space race.
A competition between the United States and the Soviet Union, to achieve dominance in spaceflight technology. Achievements worked towards included the launch of artificial satellites, robotic probes to other planets, and human missions to the Moon.
The Soviets initially took the lead by launching the first satellite, Sputnik, and placing the first man, Yuri Gagarin in space. Ultimately, the space race ended in the US landing the first humans on the Moon in 1969. The two groups then decided to work together to achieve more things. The race supplied us with significant technological advancements and scientific exploration.
Name two advantages to using space probes instead of manned spacecraft.
- Less expensive
- Travel farther and for longer periods of time.
- Eliminates the potential for human injury or death.
