The Moon vs. Earth
100

The launch site was in what state? (Where the rocket took off)

Florida

100

The four astronauts lived together in a space roughly the size of two minivans.

True

100

How many days did this mission last?

(To be exact: 9 days, 1 hour, 32 minutes, and 15 seconds)

100

The rocket's main engines ignited first. Then, the solid rocket BOOSTERS fired which provides most of the power. The boosters separated from the rocket how many minutes after take off?

2 minutes

100

If Earth were a basketball, the Moon would be about the size of a _____ ball.

tennis

200

When the astronauts were at their closest point, the Moon appeared to be the size of a ______ held at arm's length.

A basketball

200

They worked out for at least 30 minutes every day using a special flywheel machine (kind of like a rowing machine).

True- They needed to keep their muscles strong in zero gravity.

200

This was a history-making trip where humans finally went back toward the Moon for the first time in over how many years?

50 years

200

Since the launch took place at Kennedy Space Center in Florida, what ocean did they splash down in from after they separated from the rocket?

Atlantic Ocean

(The ocean that you swim in when visiting Myrtle Beach, Charleston, or off of the east coast of the United States)

200

The Moon is covered in _______(big holes) because it gets hit by space rocks. Earth has an atmosphere that burns up most space rocks before they hit.

craters

300

The landing site was where? (Hint: near San Diego, California)

Pacific Ocean

300

They ate "low-crumb" food like chicken curry and shrimp cocktail.

True- they had to be careful because crumbs can float away and get stuck in the ship's computers!

300

How many astronauts went on this mission?

4

300

On the 7th day, Orion (the spacecraft) LEFT the Moon's gravity to begin its journey back to _________.

Earth

300

The Moon is Earth's only natural satellite, meaning it travels around us (like a carousel- a merry-go-round) in about ____ days.

27 days

400

The crew broke the record for what?

The farthest human distance from Earth.... traveling over 252,756 miles.

400

Without gravity to pull them onto a bed, the astronauts slept in sleeping bags this way.

Strapped to the walls.

400

To get home, the Orion capsule hits Earth's atmosphere at _____ mph, and splashed into the Pacific Ocean. (That's faster than a speeding bullet.)

(Hint: It's a 5-digit number.)

24,661

400

Orion, the spacecraft, entered the Moon's gravitiy  after how many days on their mission?

6th day

400

Because there is no _____(atmosphere) and no ______, you cannot live on the Moon without a heavy spacesuit.

NO air & water
500

What was this mission preparing for?

It helped prepare for future Artemis missions that aim to land astronauts on the Moon again.

500

Since there's no running water, "showering" involved what 2 items?

Baby wipes & no rinse shampoo

500

The crew traveled how many miles away from the Earth? This is the farthest humans have ever gone into space! (Hint: It's a 6-digit number.)

252,756 miles

DAILY DOUBLE!!!!What was the 4 stages when returning to Earth from space? (200 points per correct answer--- If you get all you get 1000 points!)

1. The Fiery Heat Shield (Fast & Hot) When the spacecraft first hit Earth's atmosphere, it was traveling incredibly fast—over 24,000 mph!

  • The Problem: Friction with the air makes the outside of the ship hotter than the surface of the sun.
  • The Solution: The bottom of the capsule has a special shield that gets hot and burns away, keeping the astronauts inside cool and safe.

2. Slowing Down with Parachutes--After the heat shield did its job, the capsule was still going too fast--- about 300 mph.

  • 11 Parachutes: The spacecraft released a series of parachutes. First, small ones to make it stable, then huge, orange-and-white parachutes to slow it down to about 20 mph
  • The View: The astronauts felt a big "jerk" when the parachutes opened, similar to hitting a speed bump!

3. The Big Splash! (Splashdown)--The capsule landed safely in the Pacific Ocean off the coast of California.

  • Water Landing: Instead of landing on land, the capsule splashes into the water.
  • Navy Rescue: Navy ships and helicopters were waiting nearby to help the crew out of the capsule.

4. Back on Earth--Once they were out of the capsule, the astronauts went to the ship to start resting and talking to doctors to make sure they were healthy after their long journey around the Moon.

You weigh___ times less on the Moon!

If you weigh 60 pounds on Earth, you would only feel like you weigh 10 pounds on the Moon.
