The Moon is a sphere but it does not emit its own light.  It is illuminated by the Sun.  As the moon orbits around Earth, the moon appears to change shape because we only see the portion that it is illuminated by the Sun. 

Illuminated - means lit up ....the sun's light is reflected on the moon's surface which is why it appears to be lit up!
