Naming Pluto

When "Planet X" was discovered in 1930, astronomers began debating what to call it. An eleven-year-old girl named Venetia Burney suggested the name "Pluto" to her grandfather, who passed the idea along to a friend who was a professor of astronomy. The professor, in turn, immediately forwarded the suggestion to scientists at the Lowell Observatory, where the planet had been discovered. The astronomers appreciated the fact that Pluto was the ancient Romans' name for the god of the underworld, making it a fitting moniker for such a cold and distant celestial body. In addition, its first two letters matched the initials of Percival Lowell, the astronomer who first proposed the existence of Planet X. The matter was eventually put to a vote, with Pluto the hands-down winner.

What is the main idea of the passage?

Pluto is a good name for a cold, distant planet because it is the name of the Roman god of the underworld.

After an eleven-year-old girl suggested "Pluto," astronomers chose it as the name of a newly discovered planet.

Many of Winchester's neighboring communities have fenced dog parks. It's about time that Winchester had a dog park, too.

Dog parks benefit the community, dogs, and dog owners alike. They keep dogs out of traffic areas and away from private property. They provide a safe zone in which dogs can interact and get exercise. A well-exercised dog is a well-behaved dog! Dog parks also provide a public place where dog owners can socialize and connect.

The Arctic and the Antarctic are both wild and icy expanses at the earth's poles. But in many respects, they're polar opposites! The Arctic region, surrounding the North Pole, is primarily sea. The northern reaches of North America, Asia, and Europe enclose the icy Arctic Sea. The floating Arctic ice generally grows to a thickness of six to nine feet. At the other pole, Antarctica is a high, dry continent, covered with snowy ice and surrounded by ocean. Ice forms on the edges of Antarctica, then drifts away to sea. Antarctica's sea ice usually measures about three to six feet thick. The regions' animals are different as well. Polar bears, for example, live in the Arctic, while penguins live in and around Antarctica.

Everybody gets holey socks. But you don't have to throw them away; try darning instead. Here are quick sock-darning directions. First, gather some cotton thread, lightweight yarn, a lightbulb, a special darning needle, scissors, and a rubber band, plus your holey sock. To begin, put the sock over the bulb so that you can see the hole, and hold it in place with the rubber band. Next, thread the needle and start sewing. You'll sew long stitches back and forth across the hole, all in one direction, filling the hole with thread. Now comes the fun part. Thread the yarn onto a yarn needle and weave it in and out, up and down, through the threads, across the hole in the opposite direction from the threads. This creates a sturdy patch in your sock.
