For the Modoc, life was centered around these areas in order to more easily collect food and create shelter
What are Rivers and Marshes
A unique kind of liquor was made from this commonly used plant
wokas/wokas seeds. It was drank cold
These items were used to weather proof a seasonal home
Tule mats, sewn with grasses
This is the primary food source for the Modoc
Fish, from trout to sucker and in between
This plant was primarily used to keep others away from food sources
Valeriana. It smells so strong that it was banned from the agency area by white occupants and used to keep bears and other animals away from food storage pits.
This mat was used as a shingle for earth/winter*permanent homes
Swamp grass mat . Features will include tule and cattails to hold in place.
The yearly cycle for the Modocs began around what season
Fall/Harvest or August*September as we know them
These berries were a primary fruit for the Modoc people as well as nearby tribes and could be made into a liquor as well
Huckleberries
The Modocs made this kind of blanket, even as their neighbors did not
Rabbit Skin blankets
To catch a variety of fish, different kinds of nets and spears were used; this item was used to secure some of these tools
Sinkers. A grooved stone used to hold the nets in place or for ease of use.
A variety of berries were gathered in the starting months of the Modoc calendar, these would be often dried and used throughout the Winter along with other food supplies
Huckleberries, Service Berries, Chokecherries, currant berries, gooseberry and raspberries among others eaten fresh
Knives were made from these materials
Stone/Flint/obsidian blades as well as shell blades
These animals were not eaten by nearby tribes but, were specifically by the Modoc
Porcupine & Chipmunk.
This food is only eaten in desperation
Black Moss
There are many bereavement traditions but this one meant even more during gathering season;
One may not fish or cross a river as there is fear the fish will flee and not return.
