In the 2004 Japanese film The Ring, people who watch a cursed video tape are destined to die in 7 days. The protagonists investigate the history of the curse and find that Sadako was sealed in a well to die, by her adoptive father, who after finding out about her psychic powers believed her to be evil. They drain the well and bury her body properly allowing her soul to rest and break the curse.
Sadako was actually evil, and her father trapped her after she killed a journalist.
Burying her body did not break the curse, but actually copying the tape and showing it to another person is the only way to avoid death.
