The south's economy suffered because slavery was abolished. They didn't have slaves to grow and harvest crops so their economy suffered

that escaped slaves had to be returned to their owners, even if the slave had made it to a free state in the North
Who was John Brown and what did he do?
He was anti-slavery supporter who broke into the army arsenal at Harpers Ferry, VA to steal weapons to fight pro-slavery supporters. He was captured with his friends and sentenced to death.
Huge win for the Union because they destroyed the railroads the South used to bring in supplies. Occurred in GA in July 1864

What did the South believe states should be able to do?
They believed that the citizens of that state should choose whether or not the state should be free or slave.
