1) The rising popularity of the Stock Market led to many people buying stocks. This not only caused stocks to lose value, but additionally, people were buying stocks "On margin," and they didn't actually have the money to buy them. So once stocks plummeted in value, the banks ran out of money because people couldn't pay their loans back.

2) Investors had predicted the market crash and demanded that people pay back their loans, so people started panic selling. This caused even LOWER stock prices and even MORE panic selling.
