What is Presbyopia?
During our cheese tasting activity, one of the residents was telling us a story about the first time she travelled to France and tried more than 50 types of cheese. Then, she went on to tell us about all the places she travelled to during her youth.
What is Episodic Memory?
A lot of the residents mentioned how much they appreciated our activities and how it gave them the chance to be involved in new things.
What is Openness to Experience?
One of the residents said that she has a good relationship with her grandchildren because she always made them cookies and let them watch endless hours of TV.
What is Fun Seeker?
A couple who came to our sessions would always argue because the husband would ask her to repeat what she had just said (more than once)!
What is Presbycusis?
We avoided this every time we had to give instructions or explanations to ensure that the residents did not feel like they were incompetent.
What is Elderspeak?
A resident shared with us that years before entering St. Andrew's, she lived in a big house where she took care of both her parents and two children.
What is Sandwich Generation?
St. Andrew's is a type of facility designed for older adults who are in a good physical and mental state, and do not need ADL assistance.
What is Independent Living Community?
During the Netflix activity, the room was located far from the main area. When residents would arrive, they were out of breath and would complain about not exercising when they had the chance. This type of aging is from poor health practices.
What is Secondary Aging?
During a game of Jeopardy, a resident became frustrated because she knew what the answer was but was unable to produce the word.
What is Tip of the Tongue Phenomena?
In our science demonstration, a resident expressed that she had wanted to become a teacher when she was younger. However, she stayed home and raised her four kids. She never stressed about becoming a stay at home mother due to her family being her main support system.
What is Emotion-focused Coping?
A resident shared with us the story of when her husband died and how she wore black and mourned him for two years.
What is Bereavement?
During our board game activity, one of the residents was trying to explain the rules of Scrabble. However, it was hard to hear her due to shakiness in her voice and a reduction in volume.
What is Presbyphonia?
After successfully performing a mini science experiment (extracting banana DNA), one of the residents exclaimed, "Who said us old dogs can't learn new things?!"
What is Plasticity?
After our documentary activity, a resident was telling us how she had to move 20 times across Canada. Though she went through this hardship, she admitted that she was proud of what she did and didn't regret a thing. (Erickson's stage of..?)
What is Integrity vs. Despair?
During our placement, we noticed that some residents had jobs in the gardening area. However, they had no prior experience because before retirement, they had different jobs.
What is Bridge Employment?
Most of the time, we had to assist the residents with opening doors or helping them sit down/stand up. They complained that over the years they have gotten weaker.
What is Sarcopenia?
When we were playing jeopardy with the residents, we had to make sure we were in a quiet, separate room so they could focus on the questions being asked. Otherwise, they would get distracted by external noises. (hypothesis #?)
What is Hypothesis #3 - Declining Inhibitory Efficiency?
A group of ladies would always come to our activities together. They all lived on the same floor which enabled them to form a tight friendship group which maximized positive feelings.
What is Emotional rewards/trajectory?
The residents would complain to us about taking three different medications in a span of two hours.
