What is an inference? What does it mean when a question asks, "based on this text, a reader can infer that..."

An inference is an educated guess or assumption based on what a text is portraying, but doesn't specifically say. For example, if the story is about kids at an outdoor swimming pool eating popsicles, a reader can infer that it takes place during the summertime, even though the text doesn't explicitly say that.
