Brush Right with Brush Right

J. Han

  1. All electric toothbrushes are not alike! What’s more, most are not designed with children’s small hands in mind. The new “Brush Right” electric toothbrush is easier for kids to hold. The Violet

Jane Taylor

Down in a green and shady bed,
A modest violet grew,
Its stalk was bent, it hung its head,
As if to hide from view.

And yet it was a lovely flower,
Its colors bright and fair;
It might have graced a rosy bower,
Instead of hiding there,

Yet there it was content to bloom,
In modest tints arrayed;
And there diffused its sweet perfume,
Within the silent shade.

Then let me to the valley go,
This pretty flower to see;
That I may also learn to grow
In sweet humility.

L. Hernandez

Shaver Middle School Tribune, May 23, 2014

Letter to the Editor

  1. No matter what the grade level, most school kids will agree: There are too few holidays during the school year. That is why I think we should get our birthdays as a day off. If the birthday falls on a weekend, then the kid should get Friday or Monday off.

  2. The thing is, all the other family members get a special day each year that is just for them. There is Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, and even Grandparents’ Day! There is no “Kids’ Day,” however, and this is unfair. Kids should get a day when they can do whatever they please, even stay home from school! Teachers wouldn’t mind having one less kid to worry about either.

Magic Clay

L. Hernandez

  1.  The package of modeling clay seemed to call to Tia every time she walked by. At last, she sat at her desk and opened up the package she'd purchased at the toy store. The only kind they had was called "Magic Clay," but she didn't ask the clerk why. She just needed something with which to make clay animals for her little sister, Daria.

  2.  In the blink of an eye, Tia's nimble fingers shaped a piece of clay into a small cat. She had just added whiskers and sat back to admire her work when its little paws moved! Tia blinked and looked again. The clay cat was now walking across the disaster area that was her messy desk. As it moved, it grew bigger until it resembled a real kitten, complete with fur! Tia's eyes grew as wide as silver dollars, and her jaw dropped open.

  3.  Just then, Tia's sister Daria knocked at the door. "Did you make my clay animals yet?" she asked when Tia answered.

Brainy Rewards

L. Hernandez

  2. Studies have also shown that trying new things makes the brain more “plastic” or stretchy. It “exercises” the brain and makes it easier to learn new things in the future. What’s more, being introduced to new things can improve your memory. That means it could actually help your test scores and make your homework easier because you will remember things better. Challenge yourself to try a sport or activity that you’ve never done before. You may be surprised by all the good things that come of it!

Second Thoughts

L. Hernandez

  1.  My brother talked me into getting a turtle for a pet, and I so wish I had ignored him and gotten a kitten or a rabbit instead. Hardly anyone has a turtle for a pet, and now I know why. About the best thing I can say about turtles is that they are easy to clean up after. Other than that, they are about as fun as watching paint dry.

  2.  There are many types of pet turtles, and they are probably all dull. They don’t really do anything, which makes them really boring. You might watch them for hours, or go away and come back, and they will still be in pretty much the same spot.

  3.  Turtles do not come running to greet you when you come home, the way a dog would. They don’t make little sounds that say they’re happy to see you, the way a cat might meow. They don’t even look right at you! Also, the turtle’s hard shell makes it impossible to pet. It’s like having a rock instead of an animal—not exactly warm and fuzzy!

  4.  Hamsters would make better pets than turtles, as would goldfish. Before you get a turtle, find out more about it first!
  5. Read this sentence from paragraph 4.

     Hamsters would make better pets than turtles, as would goldfish.
    Why is the argument based on faulty reasoning?
    • A    What people like for a pet varies.
    • B    Goldfish make better pets than hamsters.
    • C    Goldfish don’t interact with the pet owners.
    • D   Most people prefer turtles over hamsters.
