100

The star is considered what type of star in the H-R diagram?

The main sequence

100

Has arms that circle outward from a central bulge.

What is spiral galaxy

100
Our solar system is part of which galaxy?

The Milky Way

100
A massive source of light that is extremely far away in space.

A quasar

200

What is asterism?

A pattern of easily recognizable stars.

200

What is the Local Group?

A cluster of galaxies that the Milky Way belongs to

200

An area in space that scientists theorize exists with an strong gravitational pull.

A black hole
200

What is the apparent change in position of an object when viewed from different locations or points of view?

What is parallax.

300

The H-R diagram is an essential tool for astronomers to show the relationship between two things.

What is temperature and absolute magnitude.

300

Advantage of a space telescope

Use light at other wavelengths beyond visible light. Allow scientists to see other things that cannot be seen by the unaided eye.
300
What is the redshift term?

Redshift is a characteristic in which the farther away a galaxy, star, or other light source is, the more red it appears.

300

The Sun generates its energy by a process in which the nuclei of lightweight elements combine to form heavier element.

What is fusion

400
Difference between apparent magnitude and absolute magnitude.

Apparent magnitude is the brightness of a star as it appears to an observer on Earth. Absolute magnitude is the brightness of a star if all of the other stars were at the same distance from Earth.

400

What are the different types of galaxies and their description?

Spiral- arms circle outward from a central bulge

Barred - arms that circle outward from a large central bar

elliptical- shaped like a large basketball or football

irregular- haphazard shape that does not fit the other groups.

400

DAILY DOUBLE

What is dark matter and why is it called that?

Dark matter is the "missing" matter in the universe that scientists would expect to see if they big bang theory were true. It is called dark matter because no one sees it.

400

Difference between historical science vs experimental science.

Historical science studies past events by examining their results. Experimental science deals with events in which the beginning conditions are known.

500

Steps of the Big Bang theory with one piece of evidence to support and one that contradicts theory.

The Universe expanded from a tiny, hot, dense mass to become billions of times the size of the Solar System. Very quickly, the base particles of atoms formed, followed by the formation of hydrogen, and then helium. Over time, as the Universe expanded and cooled, matter clumped together, eventually forming stars and galaxies. For evidence that supports the big bang theory, any one of the following is acceptable: the existence of background radiation in space, the abundance of the light elements hydrogen and helium, and the evidence of redshift that suggests that the Universe is expanding. For evidence that contradicts it, any one of the following is acceptable: the evidence that the expansion of the Universe is speeding up rather than slowing down and there should exist more dark matter than scientists have been able to find.
