At the beginning of the story, Rainsford and Whitney have a conversation about animals’ feelings. Whitney believes animals have feelings, while Rainsford does not. He says, “The world is made up of two classes -- the hunters and the huntees” (Connell 1). Rainsford initially compares predators and prey to “classes” like social classes in society. However, he quickly changes his view when General Zaroff proposes to hunt him and he becomes prey himself. He realizes then that animals feel fear. This is quite different from his perspective at the very beginning of the story.
