It is believed that the tradition of giving red roses for Valentine’s Day has to do with the Greek Mythology Goddess Aphrodite and the Roman mythology goddess Venus; Aphrodite is the goddess of love, beauty, and pleasure.  In Roman mythology, Venus is the goddess of love.

In Greek mythology, it is believed that Aphrodite saw her boyfriend Adonis wounded by a wild boar. She ran to him, and when the mixture of her tears and his blood hit the ground, it created a red rose bush.

In Roman mythology, it was Venus who was running toward Adonis when she cut her ankles when she ran through a thorn bush, and her blood turned everything it touched into blooming roses.

A flower’s color has different meanings. Red roses are like nature’s love notes, shouting, “I love you!” Deep pink flowers dance in joy and stand for happiness. Purple flowers stand for royalty. This is what white flowers represent.

They stand for sincerity (genuine and honest).

Although no one knows the exact origin of Saint Valentine’s Day, it is believed that it started in the Roman Empire around 270AD under the rule of Claudius II.

During wartime, Claudius did not want men to get married because he believed it made them weak.

It is said that a Roman priest, Bishop Valentine, would perform secret wedding ceremonies so men could marry their sweethearts.

Bishop Valentine got in big trouble for performing marriage ceremonies and was sent to jail.

While in jail, Bishop Valentine wrote a love letter to the jailer’s daughter and signed it from your Valentine. This became the world’s first Valentine.

Bishop Valentine was put to death for his crime on February 14th.
