People with asthma may experience difficulty breathing due to inflammation, or swelling, of the inner surfaces of their airways (the passageways by which air reaches the lungs). This inflammation makes the passageways sensitive to further irritation. Exposure to substances in the air such as pollen or smoke may then trigger an asthma attack. During an attack, the muscles around the airways contract, narrowing the space through which oxygen can pass. This can prevent oxygen from entering or exiting the lungs properly. Possible symptoms during an attack include shortness of breath, coughing, wheezing, and difficulty breathing.

As Africa's population of wild lions decreases, Tanzania's Ruaha National Park provides an important habitat for the remaining lion population. However, lions and local villagers living around the park often come into conflict: lions kill valuable livestock, and villagers shoot the lions. To address this issue, the Ruaha Carnivore Project has worked closely with villagers. The Project has introduced stronger fences, warning systems, and guard dogs to reduce livestock losses. To further encourage animal conservation, the Project provides education about the importance of protecting lions. Importantly, the Project has also provided benefits, such as local health care and scholarships, to compensate villagers for the dangers they endure. These efforts have paid off, as both the villagers' livestock losses and lion deaths have declined.

Cathy noticed a wooden cabinet with dials and knobs on it. "What's that?" she asked as Mrs. Carroll handed her a dime.
"That?" Mrs. Carroll said. "I suppose you wouldn't recognize it." She chuckled. "It's a radio."
Cathy stared in disbelief. "But it's—it's practically furniture."
"That's how they used to make them. Of course, it doesn't work anymore. I keep it around anyhow because it reminds me of Mr. Carroll."

Malaria and Zika are both diseases spread by mosquitos. Malaria is deadly, and people have been fighting it for centuries. Zika, though, emerged more recently. Although symptoms of a Zika infection are usually milder than those of a malaria infection, Zika is associated with birth defects in the babies of infected mothers. Malaria and Zika are spread by two distinct types of mosquitos: malaria by the Anopheles mosquito, and Zika by the Aedes mosquito. This means that different prevention techniques are recommended. Because Anopheles bite at night, using mosquito netting over beds can help people avoid malaria. Aedes, however, bite during the day. In areas where Zika is a concern, experts recommend using insect repellents and covering the skin with clothing.

Among American Robins, the female does most of the nest-building. She starts by selecting a good site. Usually, this is a place protected from rain, wind, and sun, often on tree branches hidden by leaves. Then, using grasses and small twigs, she forms a cup-shaped nest. After forming this cup, the robin adds mud to reinforce it and cement it to its location on the tree branch or other base. Finally, she lines the nest with soft grasses and hairs. All this usually takes about five or six days, and it results in a fine home, about six to eight inches across and three to six inches high.

During World War II, the U.S. Navy was segregated by race, and many African Americans were assigned the dangerous work of preparing explosive devices for shipment. On July 17, 1944, as men loaded bombs onto ships at Port Chicago, a California naval base, two ships exploded in a massive blast. The explosion, which was due in part to inadequate safety procedures, killed hundreds, primarily African Americans. The Navy blamed the men for carelessness, and many of the disaster's survivors refused to return to work. As a result, fifty African American men were convicted of mutiny. Their conviction and imprisonment provoked outrage at the Navy's racist policies. Consequently, the Navy began assigning white sailors to share in the hazardous work, and later integrated its forces.
