Trout grow on trees! How is this true?

Trout don’t LITERALLY grow on trees, but in a freshwater food web, the life cycle of trout depends on streamside forests! As trees shed leaves, twigs, and branches all year round, they provide important habitat for young trout; they also provide important habitat AND food for aquatic macroinvertebrates that trout feed on! To put it simply, trout eat the bugs that eat the leaves that grow on trees.

Trout have this number of hearts. (Bonus: Why?)

What is two hearts?

What can a bioindicator species, such as a caddisfly, tell you about stream health?

Bioindicators are living things that tell us whether a habitat or ecosystem is healthy. These species, including some types of aquatic macroinvertebrates, are the most sensitive to (easily harmed by) pollution!

This trout is only the trout native to Pennsylvania rivers.

What is brook trout?

The brook trout is the only salmonid (trout/salmon) native to the streams and rivers of the eastern United States and, by extension, Pennsylvania. All other species of trout in Pennsylvania, such as brown trout and rainbow trout, are non-native and can even be invasive in some small streams!

What is a caddisfly?

This part of a stream habitat is fast-flowing, shallow, rocky, and very rich in oxygen. It is a very important home for animals that can cling on tight to rocks and leaves, such as caddisflies, stoneflies, mayflies, and sculpin!

What is a riffle?
