Are personal electronic devices allowed for students in grades K–8 during school hours?
No. Personal electronic devices are not allowed during school hours for students in grades K–8.
Why does every student receive a Student Identification Card?
The ID card helps the school identify students and keep the campus safe and secure.
What does the handbook say students should do with their hands and feet?
Students should keep their hands and feet to themselves at all times.
What are the regular school hours at Excelsior Middle School?
The school day is from 7:50 a.m. to 2:35 p.m.
What percentage of approved school days or hours must students of compulsory attendance age attend?
At least 90% of the approved school calendar days or hours, unless an exception applies.
Where should a middle school student keep a cell phone during the school day?
The phone must be on silent mode and kept in the student’s backpack during the school day.
Name two things a student may need a current-year ID card to do.
Students need an ID card to be in class, move between classes or to the restroom, buy lunch, and check out library books. Any two of these answers are correct.
Is fighting or physically assaulting another person allowed at school or school activities?
No. Fighting, physical abuse, and assault are violations of school rules.
What time should walk-in students not arrive before?
Walk-in students should not arrive before 7:30 a.m.
What time does a student become a late entry?
A student who arrives after 7:50 a.m. is considered a late entry. Late buses and approved medical appointments do not count as late entries.
Name one time when middle school students are authorized to use their devices, headphones, or earbuds.
Before 7:40 a.m., in classrooms at a teacher’s discretion for instructional purposes, or after 2:35 p.m.
What should a student do if an ID card is lost, stolen, altered, damaged, or defaced?
The student must replace it immediately through the main office.
What is insubordination?
Failing to abide by a reasonable request from a staff member.
Where should middle school students report before school, prior to 7:30 a.m.?
They should report to the cafeterias or the Large Gym. Other areas are open only with staff supervision or an appropriate pass.
What happens after a student’s fourth late entry during a quarter?
The student serves lunch detention that day.
What may happen if a cell phone or other communication device disrupts learning or is used inappropriately?
It may be confiscated. Depending on where it was confiscated, it may be retrieved from the teacher or the front office at the end of the day.
How much does it cost to replace an ID card or a replacement lanyard?
Each costs 2 dollars.
Do the school’s behavior rules apply only during the regular school day?
No. The rules also apply to all school-sponsored activities.
What should students do when the fire alarm sounds?
Students should leave the room quickly, walk, and follow the directions posted in each room.
What is FLEX, and when does it take place?
FLEX is daily, uninterrupted intervention time focused on remediation and extension of skills and standards. It takes place from 10:02 to 10:30 on every cycle day.
What are the consequences for a student’s first three personal-device violations in grades K–8?
First offense: Documented warning, and the student secures the device.
Second offense: A teacher or staff member holds the device until dismissal, and the parent is notified.
Third or later offense: The device is delivered to the school office, and an administrator or designee notifies the parent. A parent meeting and action plan may also be required.
Describe the correct sequence for opening a combination locker.
Turn right two whole turns and stop at the first number.
Turn left one whole turn past the first number and stop at the second number.
Turn right and stop at the third number.

What should students do when the disaster alert alarm sounds?
Students should leave the classroom immediately, move quickly and quietly to the designated disaster-alert shelter, and remain there until the all-clear signal is given.
