1a. What features of this model will help Armando answer the question?

1a. The model has running water, sand, and adjustable table legs. This helps show how water flows down a hill and how it shapes the sand, kind of like a real river.

Is Felipe correct? If he is correct, explain why the Moon always looks bright from Earth in that position, and explain how he should show light in Diagram A. If he is incorrect, explain how else the Moon can look when it is in that position.

Felipe is incorrect. While the moon does orbit the earth, the idea that it always looks completely bright when in a position shown in diagram A is a common mistake. The appearance of the moon from earth depends on how much of the sunlit side of the moon is facing us.

Is Tanisha correct? If she is correct, explain why the Moon always looks dark from Earth in both of these positions. If she is incorrect, explain when the Moon looks dark from Earth and how light on the Moon should look in each of Tanisha’s diagrams.

Tanisha is not correct. The Moon looks dark only when it is closest to the Sun because the lit side is facing away from Earth. When the Moon is farthest from the Sun, the side facing Earth is bright, so it would not look dark.

1b. How could Armando use this model to test the idea that very steep hills lead to narrow, deep rivers?

He could make the table very steep and let the water flow. Then he could see if the stream it makes in the sand is narrow and deep compared to when the table is not very steep.

1c. How could Armando use this model to test the idea that very small sand grains lead to narrow, deep rivers?

He could use different sizes of sand grains in the table. Then he could see if smaller sand grains make a narrower and deeper stream than bigger sand grains.

2. Armando thinks that it is the very steep hill that makes this river narrow and deep, but his classmate thinks it is the small size of the sand grains that the water flows through. What results from the model would be evidence that Armando’s idea is correct?

If the stream becomes narrow and deep when the table is very steep, even when the sand size stays the same, that would show the steep hill is what causes the river to be narrow and deep.
