Aldehyde Dehydrogenase Inhibitor
What is the drug class
Inform providers (doctors/dentists) of prescription, discontinue 72 hours before surgery with opioid use, risk of opioid overdose when used with opioids
What is patient and family teaching
chest pain, difficulty breathing, N/V, diaphoresis, tachycardia, seizure, death (when consumed with alcohol), hepatotoxicity
What are side effects
Ensure patient is opioid free for at least 7-10 days
What are nursing implications
Interactions with this substance can cause serious adverse effects including death
What is Alcohol
Hepatotoxicity, GI distress, nausea, dizziness, headaches, muscle cramps, anxiety, nervousness, suicidal thoughts, depression
What are side effects
Avoid all forms of alcohol including, tonics, mouthwash, cough mixtures, sauces, vinegars, aftershave, etc.
