Giving a brief statement about the main points of something
A young woman who is a maid for her wicked stepmother, wants to find true love at the royal ball, but her stepmother and stepsisters lock her inside the castle. So she gets help from her fairy godmother and then is able to attend the ball and meet her prince.

What is the difference between summarizing a story and retelling a story?
Summarizing is only telling the important parts of a story. Retelling is giving lots of details and events from the story.
