In 1861, the first classes were held in a building where the Fairmont Olympic Hotel now stands. The original campus opened in 1861 on the edge of what was then the village of Seattle. Three decades later, Seattle was a city of about 50,000 and the University needed to be relocated so it could continue to expand. In 1895, a group of about 15 faculty and 35 students moved into Denny Hall on the current campus.

In 1997, UW Tacoma opened for class in several century old warehouses on the edge of downtown. The structures, which included a mattress factory, a grocery company and a power station, were rehabilitated and retrofitted for academic use. Thanks to the historic preservation, the site conjures up the early days of the "City of Destiny."
A large fire in 1889 destroyed about 100 acres of land in Seattle, it was rebuilt:

The Olmsted family of landscape architects designed original layout of the lower campus for the 1909 Alaska-Yukon-Pacific Exposition. This was another famous project that they designed:

At the time, the Olmsted Brothers were the country’s leading landscape architecture firm. First, they designed the land that is now lower campus for the world's fair. Then in 1911, they returned to create a plan that integrated the upper campus with the old exposition grounds. One of their priorities was maximizing the view of Mount Rainier from campus.

His father, Rev. Daniel Bagley helped found the school. Unfortunately, there weren't very many young people in the area interested in attending college, so he pushed his son Clarence to enroll. Clarence eventually dropped out. He later became a historian for the region.

In 1911, a group of Chinese American students formed the UW’s first ethnic/cultural club. A Japanese Students Club formed the following year. The Black Student Union was formed in 1968. MEChA was established in 1969.
