The Monty Hall problem: imagine you're on a game show, and you're given the choice of three doors: Behind one door is a car; behind the others, nothing. You pick a door, say No. 1, and the host, who knows what's behind the doors, opens another door, say No. 3, which has nothing. He then says to you, "Do you want to pick door No. 2?". If you want to win the car, should you switch doors?

Yes; In the Monty Hall problem, your first choice has a 1/3 chance of being the car, so there’s a 2/3 chance it’s behind one of the other two doors. When the host, who knows where the car is, opens a door with nothing, he effectively transfers that 2/3 probability to the remaining unopened door. This means switching takes advantage of the higher probability that the car is not behind your original choice, making switching the smarter option.
