The game was about Jumpman (who was later named Mario) trying to save his girlfriend known as Lady (who was later named Pauline and she is now Mario's ex-girlfriend) from an ape known as Donkey Kong (who was later confirmed to actually be Cranky Kong meaning he was the original Donkey Kong). The gameplay had Jumpman jumping over barrels thrown by Donkey Kong to try to get to the top of the construction sight in order to save Lady.
