My favorite holiday tradition is cooking family recipes that make it feel & smell like Christmas

around our house, since I have lived away from family for most of my adult life, carrying on my

family traditions from when I was a kid was important to me to show my kids what we made during the holidays..

Growing up, we would always celebrate Christmas Eve doing the 7 Fishes (an Italian tradition) and clams oreganato had to be 1 of the 7 fishes. Clams Oreganato is special to us because it's a dish my great Uncle served at his restaurant when my family emigrated from Italy to the US. We have the newspaper clipping to prove it

After our Christmas Eve parties each year we went to Midnight Mass. It started in 6th grade when I served as an altar server for midnight mass then became a tradition. After church, my siblings and I would wrap all of our presents together. My parents thought we were crazy staying up til 3am to wrap :)

My extended family does a DIY exchange. Names are picked and for that Christmas gathering, everyone gets a homemade gift. We’ve done it over a decade now and the quality keeps getting better and better. It’s really cool to see the personalized things and thought that goes into peoples gifting. Examples: pie, house décor/crafts, personalized tshirt, photo crafts, people incorporate hobbies into it, etc.

My mom bought a small Xmas tree...maybe a foot or two high and had us decorate it. It only took like one thing of garland, like 6 ornaments and one string of lights. We decorated it on XMAS eve and left it in the middle of the floor. When we woke up the next morning she had stacked all the gifts pyramid style and the tree was touching the ceiling. I remember my brother and i thinking santa liked us waaaay more than the other kids in our building😊

My fav holiday memory is having my whole family having a huge holiday dinner, sipping egg nog in Mom's very fancy glasses and using all the fine cutlery she had. We would watch all the old Home Alone movies and go for a drive after and admire the lights in Candy Cane lane!

When I was younger I always wore some sort of velvet dress on Christmas day.  Started when I was born till about High School. I would wear to mass and to my grandparents house for the day.  The white tree was my grandparents tree and when my parents moved from my grandparents flat to my childhood home, they gave the white Christmas tree to my parents.  I always had a white Christmas tree growing up and it wasn't until I was in HS that my parents moved to a green fake tree.

We try to keep our Catholic Polish heritage alive by having a traditional Wigilia on Christmas eve. Wigilia is a meat free meal usually eaten after sundown that traditionally includes 12 dishes and desserts. Some of the dishes we have are fish ( typically fried but we switched to salmon in past years to be healthier), Pierogi, Kluski( noodles and farmer cheese), Mushroom soup, Green beans, Kolaczki, etc. Before dinner we do oplatki (which is an unleavened wafer) where we would walk around to each of our family members before sitting down and wish best wishes for the new year ( it gets dicey sometimes and have seen tears in the past but mostly its, “good luck getting that house this year, I wish you happiness and the best of health” ). Normally after dinner we would attend the first Christmas mass.
