Look at the listener to see if they are interested and understands what your saying.
As a listener, how can I respond appropriately ?
Don't interrupt by asking questions that are not on the topic even even if I want to talk about something else. It is the speakers turn.
Respond about the topic. If you say nothing the speaker will stop talking because they will feel that your are not interested .
When I am ready to leave :
I say "see ya" or "Bye."
Then walk away.
Should I do all of the talking while chit-chatting?
Ask a few questions and listen to the response from the other person. Both people should take turns talking and listening.
