Explain Petruchio's message in the following lines:

"And woo her with some spirit when she comes! Say that she rail, why then I'll tell her plain she sings as sweetly as the nightingale. Say that she frown, I'll say she looks as clear as morning roses newly washed with dew. Say she be mute and will not speak a word, then I'll commend her volubility and say she uttereth piercing eloquence. If she do bid me pack, I'll give her thanks as though she bid me stay by her a week.If she deny to wed, I'll crave the day when I shall ask the banns, and when be married."

Petruchio establishes his intentions to woo Katherine by deliberately turning her negative traits into positive ones. This is his plan to "tame" Katherine by using excessive compliments to win her obedience.

400

She is treated unfairly by those around her and lashes out in anger
400

How can we see the theme of social class in Act 2?

Knowing that "movable" means both: a) inspired, b) a piece of furniture and c) a whimsical person, how does this change our understanding of the following lines:

P: I am moved to woo thee for a wife.

K: "Moved" in good time! Let me that moved you hither remove you hence. I know you at the first you were a moveable.

P: Why, what's a movable?

K: A joint stool.

P: Though hast hit it. Come, sit on me.

Petruchios starts by saying he is "inspired" to court Katherine, Katherine's reponse is telling him to be uninspired and calling him a moveable = whimsical person meaning he's crazy.

Petruchio plays dumb and asks the meaning to which Katherine sarcastically responses "A joint stool" meaning a piece of furniture and not the other meaning.

Petruchio uses this moment to say a risque comment to try and one up Katherine.

400

What is a dowry?

500

Life is a stage. She should play her part (i.e. do what he says/wants)

500

How does Act 2 draw attention to gender roles and the dynamics of power?

Katherine has no say in her marriage to Petruchio and although she disagrees she is still going to be wed to Petruchio.

Bianca, even though she is thus far has displayed the expectations of society, also has no say in who she will marry.

Women who are quick-witted/intelligent and act scoldingly are not what is desired by society and thus will be pushed aside for those who conform to societies expectations.

Explain the significance of the following quote in the plot:

Petruchio: "I choose her for myself. If she and I be pleased, what's that to you? Tis bargained 'twixt us twain, being alone, That she shall still be curst in company. I tell, you tis incredible to believe how much she loves me. O the kindest Kate! She hung on my next, and kiss on kiss she vied so vast, protesting oath on oath, that in a twink she won me to her love. O, you are novices! 'Tis a world to see how tame when men and women are alone, A meacock wretch can make the curtest shrew. - Give me they hand, Kate. I will unto Venice to buy apparel 'gainst the wedding day. -Provide the feast, father, and bid the guests. I will be sure my Katherine shall be fine."

Baptista: "I know not what to say, but give me your hands. God send you joy, Petruchio. 'Tis a match."

-Katherine stays quiet after Petruchio's speech which is very unusual for her, either showing that she's in shock or maybe doesn't dislike Petruchio as much as she leads us to believe.
