EDUCATION
What should our teaching strategies emphasize? List at least 5 of them.
List 3 practices that we should stay away from.
- content and skill mastery
- competency-based assessment
- authentic assessments
- differentiated instruction
- student-centered learning
- experiential learning
- real-world applications
- blended learning
- the use of technology to enhance learning and instruction.
1. Describe the dress code for teachers related to:
- Casual days/school-related events (males and females)
- Wearing jeans, and jewelry for males
2. Every _____ is casual day. If it falls on a holiday, then the casual day moves to ______.
1. All school-related events/casual days: Teachers must never wear clothing with:
- inappropriate printed words, slogans, or images.. (such as things related to alcohol, drugs, profanity, or gangs).
- Sleeveless tops for females must be thick (no spaghetti straps) and come to the edge of the shoulder. Women’s skirts must touch the knee or pants to the lower calf and they must not be tight. All clothing must be professional in nature and not be see-through, excessively tight, or reveal cleavage. No midriff skin may show.
No holes in jeans. No earrings for males.
2. Every Friday; Thursday.
1. Why is it important that most discipline matters be handled by the teacher?
2. In what cases should students be sent to or referred to the principal?
1. To develop a sense of respect from the students.
2. In cases of gross misconduct, repeated misbehavior, or direct disrespect to the teacher.
REMINDER: An office referral form should be submitted to the principal to be included in the student’s permanent file.
The teacher should follow-up directly with the Principal or Vice Principal, student, and parent during or after school or the following day.
1. All teachers are responsible for integrating cross-curricular planning (among other practices) to maximize learning outcomes. Briefly explain what is cross-curricular planning and give and give an example you have used in your classroom this school year.
2. After I report students at-risk of dropping out or failure, what must I also do to be solution-oriented?
1. It is a teaching approach that encourages collaboration among teachers and helps students see how knowledge and skills are related and applied in the real world, instead of teaching subjects in isolation.
2 Offer suggestions to aid in retention.
1. How long should teachers remain on campus after the last class and why?
2. Teachers should be prepared to exit the classroom or have students exit at the end of the scheduled class so that the next class may begin on time. Teachers should not keep students and cause them to be late to their next class.
How does it impact students and other teachers when classes run over the scheduled time? (Think question)
1. 60 minutes after the last class. Why? To provide tutoring to students and to answer any questions.
2. Ending class on time for both teachers and students, shows respect for everyone’s schedule. When students are dismissed late for their next class, this disrupts learning and causes them to miss important instructions. It also affects the teacher of the next class, who may lose valuable teaching time and have to deal with interruptions. Staying on schedule helps keep the school day organized and fair for all.
What are 2 differentiated learning techniques that can be implemented as much as possible? Give one example under each of the 2 techniques.
Differentiated Learning by Depth of Ability:
The teacher will provide assignments that push the faster learners to achieve deeper learning.
o Teachers will also identify students who require additional help to keep up with the general concepts - tutoring or extra work
o Teachers will provide accommodations and/or modifications based on Individualized Learning Plans for students with special needs.
Differentiated Learning by Choice of Learning Style: students choose how to demonstrate learning of a concept.
1. How do I know if I have a "high failure rate" in my classroom?
2. In a class of 22 students, what does this number look like and what should I do if this many students are failing?
1. Greater than 10%.
2. Two students. Teachers should immediately report to the HOD and Principal and develop intervention strategies to reduce repetition and/or drop-out.
1. What should teachers not do in the presence of students and why? (2 reasons why)
2. What should teachers do, instead?
1. Teachers must never speak negatively to or about another teacher, staff member, administrator or the institution in the presence of a student.
Why?
- This erodes professionalism and trust on campus.
- It models negative behavior for students.
2. This type of discussion should be dealt with in a solution-oriented discussion with the Principal, Vice Principal, or HOD.
What are best practices when it comes to avoiding zeros in grading? Hint: There are 4.
Student should:
1. Be assigned to after-school tutoring on the day the work was not completed until it is done.
2. Sign or put in writing that they understand they must stay after school until the work is completed.
3. If the student does not attend, the parent should be notified by the teacher that the student signed that he or she would stay, but did not.
4. If this process does not improve the situation, it should be referred to the Principal or Vice Principal.
All teachers should incorporate the O.A. Way into their teaching, mentoring, and intervention strategies.
The OA Way represents the path that OA students follow to prepare for success during high school and after graduation. What is the OA Way? Be sure to explain what each entails.
