How did Demoman lose his left eye?
When young Demoman was sweeping the floor in Merasmus' abode, and touched the evil grimoire he was told specifically not to touch. It was the Bombinomicon, and it ripped out his eye. Merasmus kept the eye in contained in his staff until it broke out during one of RED team's halloween parties due to an argument with Soldier, causing the eye to attack. The eye is dubbed Monoculus.

What was Poopy Joe's tragic fate?
In an attempt to rid themselves of weapons involved in a US Senate investigation, Mann Co. sends a "monkeynaut" named Poopy Joe into space. The rocket is originally fueled with liquid Australium, with the entire national reserve of the United State's Australium being committed to the project. Shortly before takeoff, Saxton Hale replaces the Australium with defective suitcase explosives. As a result, the rocket crashes, killing Poopy Joe. Saxton unsuccessfully tries to cover up the event in subsequent Senate hearings. Moreover, after the crash, no trace of the supplied Australium was found.
