Can you reactive members accounts that are in an inactive status?

Yes! 

If a member's accounts meet the conditions to be assessed a fee, take one of the following actions in order to reactivate the account.

  • Advise member of the account status and potential fees, and encourage them to begin using their account.
  • Attempt to open another product or service or encourage the member to raise the account balance above $50 to avoid the $3 quarterly fee.
  • For a temporary fix, offer to transfer a small amount of funds between the accounts. In this case, the account will return to active status after posting.

If the account is closed, determine if the account can be reopend:

  • Membership Savings Account: may be reopened within 30 days of closure even if the member is no longer within our field of membership. Outside of the 30 days, determine if the member is eligible for membership. 
  • Non-Membership Accounts: may be reopened as long as the closed account still appears in UAD.
    • CCO: Transfer the call to Account Services to be reopened.

Who should we contact if a member calls and says the owner of the account is deceased and it is a new case to NF?

When a member passes away, report the death to Survivor Support. Survivor Support is a specialized department dedicated to helping the deceased member's family handle their financial affairs with Navy Federal to ensure those entitled to the funds receive them in a timely manner. Survivor Support completes:

  • The settlement of all Navy Federal accounts.
  • The establishment of estate accounts.
  • Gathering as much information as possible without invading privacy or causing undue stress.

The person notifying Navy Federal of a member's death is known as the point of contact (POC).
