100

The knowledge, processes and products that solve problems and make work easier

Technology

100

An object orbiting the Earth that can be used to send and receive signals

Satellite

100

Why is a GPS system an important piece of technology?

GPS technology sends location data from satellites orbiting Earth. They can give users directions to a destination.

100

What is the first step in the design process?

Identify the problem

100

After you determine a design solution, what is the next step in the design process?

Build a prototype

200

A set of steps for developing products and processes that solve problems

Design process

200

Give two examples of technology that have improved transportation systems.

ex. Cars, trains, planes, etc.

200

Name two defense systems the body has against germs. How do these systems protect you?

Tears: Flush out the eye

Skin: Stops germs from entering the body

Saliva: First defense against bacteria entering the mouth

Blood: White blood cells attack viruses and bacteria

200

What are resources you can use to conduct research?

Internet, encyclopedias, books, interviewing experts, etc.

200

Why is it important to communicate your results with other scientists?

Communicating results allows you to share ideas with others. Other scientists may help you find solutions to problems with your product.

300

The first fully working product that uses your design solution

Prototype

300

Give three examples of technology used in your home.

Television, Computer, Microwave, etc. (Accept all reasonable answers)

300

How does a bandage mimic the job of the skin?

If you have a cut, a bandage protects the open wound from bacteria.

300

Who designed the world's first piloted and powered airplane?

Orville and Wilbur Wright

300

What is the main purpose of developing a prototype?

To test whether or not your product will work

400

A smaller or simpler version of an object

Model

400

How has train transportation changed over time?

The first trains ran on steam power from the 1800s to the mid-1900s. Then electric, diesel and magnetic levitation trains replaced steam trains. Magnetic levitation trains use powerful magnetics to move just above their tracks. Magnetic levitation trains are faster than diesel-electric trains.

400

Give two examples of technology at school.

Electronic whiteboard

Intercom system

Chromebooks

Accept all reasonable answers

400

Once you determine a solution that solves your problem, what are three other factors to consider before building a prototype?

Cost

Time

Safety

400

What is an unintended problem created by airplane travel?

Accept all reasonable answers

- noise pollution, environmental pollution, etc.

500

To move people or goods from one location to another location

Transport

500

Give an example of healthcare technology. Who benefits from this technology?

Ex. Vaccines offer protection from viruses. All eligible individuals benefit from this technology. Accept all reasonable answers.
500

How have airplane designs changed over time?

The Wright brothers tested gliders and the first motorized airplane that laid the foundation for modern jets that can turn easily.

500

Explain the design process in your own words.

Accept reasonable responses.

1. Identify the problem

2. Do research

3. Develop possible solutions

4. Choose one solution

5. Design and construct a prototype

6. Test the prototype

7. Communicate results

8. Evaluate and redesign

500

Why is it important to record your measurements and observations when testing a prototype?

So you are able to make adjustments when you evaluate and redesign.
