It is a celebration of the ending of slavery in the US. On June 19, 1865, the last Union soldier announcement that slavery was ended. (However, even this did not free all people. It wasn’t until December 18, 1865 that the 13th Amendment was issued, officially ending slavery. The Emancipation Proclamation was issued 2.5 years prior to June 19, 1865.)
