Explain the rules for using past simple versus past continuous. Give examples.

V minulosti probíhala určitá činnost nebo děj, na kterou se dotazuje daná otázka. Trvání tohto děje je zdůrazněno použitím minulého času průběhového. Tento děj byl přerušen jiným, který se odehrál okamžitě. Pro ten použijeme minulý čas prostý.

Pro porovnání:

  • Marek was studying for his test while Camilla was listening to music.

I když jde o dva děje v minulosti, oba probíhaly ve stejnou dobu a navzájem se nepřerušily.

V následujícím případě jde taky o více činností v minulosti:

  • He walked to the bar and sat next to her.

Jedná se však o sérii událostí, proto je použitý minulý čas prostý. Předtím, než si vedle ní sedl, musel nejdřív k baru přijít.

2. Yes - the event was ongoing for a certaing period of time - when I was running - for a certain amount of time, and then I broke my leg. 

3. Yes - we are talking about a regular activity in the background here that is in the past continous and here it shows the temporality of the event - she was feeding the dogs temporarily,  in the meantime the neighbours were on holiday.
