I believe this could be symbolized in many ways. I think it symbolized that her family was moving on with their lives, she was growing up and was expected to be out there living life on her own, to create a family of her own. If things were not real to her when she got there, they were then.

Tess dipped into the money Angel left her. Her parents used a lot of that money. Even though she needed more she was too scared to ask the Clares for any money.
