Annotating a text is when the reader “marks up” a text to indicate places of importance or something they don’t understand.

What are some ways we annotate?
Sometimes students annotate by circling a word, underlining a phrase or highlighting a sentence.
What are some multiple choice strategies?
Reread the question. Make sure you understand what is being asked.
Come up with an answer to the question before looking at the list of choices.
Read ALL of the answers and cross out the choices that don’t make sense.
Underline the section in the text or question that supports your reasoning.
Look carefully at similar-sounding answers. Find the more precise answer.
Select “All of the above” if two or three answers seem correct

Make sure you listen to directions the first time. If you don’t understand, raise your hand and ask for help.
2. Read Every Question
Read the whole question before you answer. Don’t rush!
3. Look for Clues
Circle or underline important words in the question. They can help you find the right answer.
4. Take Your Time
Slow and steady wins the race! Check your work when you finish.
5. Show Your Thinking
If it’s math, draw a picture or write your steps. If it’s reading, look back in the story for proof.
6. Stay Calm
Take a deep breath if you feel nervous. You know more than you think!
7. Try Every Question
Don’t leave any blank. Make your best guess if you’re not sure.

Non-fiction (read this passage, words like true events, gives facts about something we know to be real, an account/biography)
