1 & 2 Chronicles are like the books of the Samuels and the books of the Kings in that they basically cover the same time period and have the same content. The Chronicles are different in that they have a more priestly (religious, worship, temple) focus.

For a nation that was trying to reestablish itself in its land and in proper worship, the mixed marriages threatened the pure worship of the people. When Israelites married pagan spouses, the spouses brought their idol worship into the nation, thereby undermining the proper worship of the Lord at the temple.
