At that time, poetry was one of the best methods in Arabia to spread news quickly to distant places. He hoped that wherever Zayd lived, he would hear the poetry and reunite with him.

He brought Bilal to the open desert everyday and severely beat him. When the sun was the hottest, Umayyah made Bilal lie down on the sand without any clothes on to protect him from the burning hot sand. Then he placed a large boulder on Bilal’s chest to increase his suffering. He tied up Bilal and dragged him along the hot sand. When Umaayah asked Bilal to give up Islam, Bilal replied with One! One! everytime, meaning Allah is One.
