When Orville and Wilbur Wright began making their own kites and toy helicopters as young boys, they had no idea they would someday change the world of flight forever. Before their first flight, they spent years working on different wing designs, engines, and propellers for the perfect airplane. Orville Wright, the younger brother, was the pilot of the airplane that they flew at Kitty Hawk in North Carolina in December of 1903. Ring! The sound of the recess bell is one of the best sounds a child can hear when they are at school. Although some children feel excluded and vulnerable while on the playground, most cannot wait to leave the stuffy classroom for the outdoors. Recess is essential for a child’s physical well-being, as their young bodies need to move around.

Ask any child what their favorite subject in school is, and you are guaranteed to hear the following answer more than once: “Recess!” Recess, or outdoor free time during the school day, allows children to exercise, socialize, and even learn about the outdoors. They can make friends without adult restrictions, and they often stimulate their brains by inventing their own creative outdoor games.

a. Recess provides children with much-needed exercise.

b. Recess helps children use their brains.

Did you ever wonder what life was like for the early colonists of North America? The colony of Jamestown is one of the most well-known early colonies. It was established in 1607 when settlers sailed to the new lands discovered by the explorer Christopher Columbus. The first settlers didn’t know how to hunt and fish and were starving until they received aid from the neighboring Native American tribe the Powhatans.

In 1492, the explorer Christopher Columbus discovered a new land, which was called the “New World” by early colonists. One of the first colonies established there was called Jamestown. The first few winters were hard on the colonists, who accidentally built their fort in an area that was freezing in the winter and swampy and mosquito-ridden in the summer. Only fifty out of five hundred colonists survived the winter of 1609.

Where Native Americans lived depended largely on how long they stayed in one place. If they were temporarily residing in an area, they typically slept in tepees. A longhouse was a much bigger, long-term rectangular structure made out of wood and bark. A pueblo was a giant structure that was sometimes built into the side of a cliff or cave. It could house thousands of people for many years.

Native American tribes in the United States lived in three primary structures: the teepee, the longhouse, and the pueblo. A tepee is a cone-shaped structure made out of long poles wrapped in buffalo hide. They would build a fire in the middle of the tepee to stay warm in colder months. A tepee only took thirty minutes to set up and even less time to break down. Longhouses and pueblos were larger buildings that took longer to create.

b. Native American tribes moved around a lot.

c. Tepees were temporary structures made out of poles and buffalo skins.
