What is neglect?

Children are considered to be neglected when their guardian shows a pattern of not providing them with the necessary food, clothing, shelter, education, supervision or medical care. As a result of this, children’s physical, mental or emotional state can become compromised.

what is the difference between physical abuse and acceptable punishment? 

physical abuse- The law calls it Child Physical Abuse when a child is hurt or injured by a parent or another grownup who is taking care of them.  This means if a child has red marks, bruises, cuts, broken bones or is hurt in any other way while a parent is punishing them, a parent has broken the law.

acceptable punishment- Physical punishment is the use of spanking, hitting or any other form of physical discipline as a way to stop or change a child’s behavior when a parent does not like the child’s behavior.

how do kids who have been physically abused typically feel?

Children may feel many different feelings when they are physically abused. Some children may feel embarrassed because they think they did something wrong and the physical abuse is their fault. Children may be fearful of the person who hurt them.  Children may love the person who hurt them and be angry at that person at the same time.  No matter how a kid feels, all feelings are OK!

What is emotional abuse? 

“Feeling Abuse” or Emotional Abuse is when we call someone a name or threaten to hurt him or her, or make him or her feel bad.  Calling someone “stupid” or saying we will hit someone if they do not pick up a toy is “feeling abuse”. Often, this type of abuse happens in the same home where physical abuse is happening.
