What is the amygdala's and hippocampus's role in trauma?

Amygdala: tags memories with emotions and fires off a quick alarm based on an emotional memory

Hippocampus: shuts down during traumatic experiences and so the full memory is not completely stored. As a result, the amygdala doesn't know the difference between a threat then and a threat now.

Why do some people not tell anyone about their sexual abuse?

Many reasons. They could be scared to get in trouble, afraid of being harmed by the perpetrator, confused about what is happening or whether it is okay, or ashamed or guilty about what has happened, even though its not the survivors fault.

How does trauma impact the brain?

When you experience trauma the prefrontal cortex (reasoning, judgment and thinking part of the brain) shuts down and the amygdala (fear center) and brain stem activate to prepare your body for fight, flight, or freeze (survival mode).

They may feel like it is their fault because they let the perpetrator touch their private body parts or because they touched the abusers private body parts. It is important to understand that the perpetrator made them feel confused or scared. Sexual abuse is always the perpetrators fault, no matter what!
