What is the 26th Amendment?
Southern states bypassed this amendment by enacting clever rules. These laws did not mention race. Instead, they used poll taxes, literacy tests, and background rules to stop Black men from voting while letting poor white men vote. These barriers stayed in place until the Voting Rights Act of 1965.
What is the 15th Amendment?
These two constitutional amendments—ratified in 1870 and 1964, respectively—expanded voting rights by prohibiting discrimination based on race and eliminating poll taxes.
