The ships are very narrow with twenty oars on each side. They have a spear on the front end so they can "ram" other ships during fighting. They were good for battle, and short voyages. They could not store many goods, their sails were useless against strong winds, and they needed to hug the coastline.

Poseidon actually saves Telemachus's life by putting a thick cloud around the "Suitor's ships." Therefore, the suitors could not attack Telemachus and kill him.
