American- Gen. Horatio Gates; British- Gen. Lord Cornwallis Gates' men were not prepared to fight against the British regulars. Gates put inexperienced militia on the front lines to fight out in the open against the experienced British army. Gates and many of the militia ended up fleeing from the British, and Gates was subsequently replaced as leader of the Continental Army in the South.
