Group CER:

Following CER, explain why honey sinks to the bottom of the glass and lamp oil floats to the top of the density tower.

Example:

The honey sinks to the bottom because it is more dense than water while the lamp oil is less dense than water so it floats to the top of the density tower. Substances that are more dense than water will sink and substances that are less dense than water will float. The honey sank to the bottom so it must be more dense than water and the lamp oil floated to the top so it must be less dense than water.

Group Short Constructed Response

Imagine you are in the forest. Describe the mixtures you see around you and explain what makes them a mixture in 2-3 sentences.

Mixtures I see in the forest are soil, grass, leaves, sticks, water (streams). These are mixtures because their physical properties don’t change when they are mixed together, and I can easily separate them from each other.
