The nurse is educating the client receiving treatment for high cholesterol on healthy foods for high cholesterol vs. unhealthy foods. Which oods are more appropriate for clients who have high cholesterol? Select all that apply

A.    Almonds

B.    Grapefruits

C.   Avocados

D.   Coconut Oil

E.    Plain Popcorn

What is A. Almonds, C. Coconut oil and D. Plain popcorn

Rational: The best diet to avoid high cholesterol is a diet rich in fruits and vegetables and low in trans- and saturated fats. Healthy foods and snacks include nuts, olive or canola oil, avocados, and plain popcorn. It is best to avoid prepackaged foods, red meats, butter, and baked goodies. Monounsaturated fats help lower blood cholesterol levels and are considered the “good” fats for heart health. Unsaturated fats lower LDL and increase HDL. Fiber also helps lower cholesterol. Grapefruits have health benefits, but there are many drug interactions associated with this food. It is best for the client receiving cholesterol-lowering medications to avoid grapefruits.

A client has cholesterol levels of: total cholesterol 221 mg/dL, HDL 103 mg/dL, triglycerides 149 mg/dL, and LDL 122 mg/dL. Choose the normal cholesterol values. Select all that apply

A.    Total cholesterol

B.    HDL

C.   Triglycerides

D.   LDL

What is B. HDL and C. LDL

Rational: Total cholesterol should be under 200 mg/dL. Being overweight and inactive increases total cholesterol. Good cholesterol is known as HDL and should be over 40 mg/dL. It removes cholesterol from the bloodstream. LDL is known as the bad cholesterol. Anything over 100 can cause buildup of LDL within blood vessels and cause narrowing or clots. Triglycerides are caused by consuming too many calories. Triglycerides should be 150 mg/dL or less

Which are types of Anemia? Select all that apply

A.    Iron deficiency

B.    Sickle cell

C.   Thalassemia

D.   Vitamin deficiency

E.    Aplastic

What is A-E

Rational: The many types of anemias may be caused by different reasons, but all result in the same outcome. A low amount of red blood cells which results in low oxygen perfusion throughout the body. Iron deficiency anemia is the most common type of anemia. It occurs when the body does not have enough iron. Sickle cell anemia is an inherited form of anemia. It is caused by a gene mutation that causes sickling of the red blood cell which results in cells getting stuck in small blood vessels and slows or blocks the blood flow. Thalassemia is an inherited blood condition where the body makes an inadequate amount of hemoglobin. Vitamin deficiencies can also cause anemia. Aplastic anemia is a result of the bone marrow producing no or very little red blood cells.

The nurse is reviewing the medication list for the client with hemophilia. Which medication on the list would the nurse question? Select all that apply.

A.    Acetaminophen

B.    Ibuprofen

C.   Vitamin D

D.   Vitamin E

E.    Levothyroxine

What is B. Ibuprofen and D. Levothyroxine

Rational: Hemophilia is an inherited disorder where blood doesn’t clot normally, this increases the risk of major bleeding post any small injury. For this reason, drugs that can cause bleeding should be avoided. These include NSAIDs, vitamin E, ginseng, ginkgo biloba, garlic, omega 3, and St. John’s Wort. Other contraindications for hemophilia include anything that causes bleeding. These include avoiding injections, razors, contact sports, alcohol, overdose of acetaminophen, hard bristled toothbrushes, constipation, and anything that increases fall risks.

Which complications may result from uncontrolled hypertension HTN? Select all that apply

A.    Asthma

B.    Atherosclerosis

C.   Retinopathy

D.   Peritonitis

E.    Alport Syndrome

What is B. Atherosclerosis and C. Retinopathy

Rational: Uncontrolled hypertension (HTN) can cause severe problems, especially in the most vital organs of the body. Complications from hypertension can include stiff, hard blood vessels (atherosclerosis), hypertensive retinopathy, kidney damage, heart failure, and strokes. Atherosclerosis may result because HTN causes increased pressure against the arterial walls. Over time, vessels may become stiff and hard. Hypertensive retinopathy occurs when HTN leads to increased pressure on the retinal blood vessels. Prolonged pressure can cause retinal damage, optic nerve impairment, and eventually vision loss.
