Montresor ears Fortunado's trust by being very nice and offering him some expensive wine. Little did he know he was going to be killed that night. Freedom and Confinement: In the story, Fortunado is physically confined, and it is believed that Montressor is mentally confined, because he may be suffering from an illness.
