The immediate cause of the Civil War was the Election of Abraham Lincoln in 1860.  When he was elected, several southern states left the union. Lincoln believed that secession was illegal and that he had the responsibility to preserve the Union.

Many people on both sides of the argument rushed into Kansas and for several months there was violent and deadly fighting between both groups. This created major tension between the north and south.
