The basic unit of life
The cell
The 4 components of blood:
Red blood cells (RBC's), white blood cells (WBC's), plasma and platelets
Correct name for the windpipe
The trachea
Part of the digestive system where most digested food enter your blood
The small intestine
The two cellular waste products that are removed from the body
Carbon Dioxide and Urine
System including blood, blood vessels, and heart that transport life-support substances to cells and removes waste
The circulatory system (or cardiovascular)
Two things that the circulatory system delivers to all cells
Food (glucose), and oxygen
Reason blood circulates through the lungs
To remove CO2 from the blood, to pick up/add O2 to the blood
Substances taken out of blood to be used by cells
Sugar and other nutrients go into cells from the blood
Reason it is important to filter waste material from blood
If too much waste material builds up in cells, the cells will die?
System that includes tissues and organs that provide gas exchange between the blood and the atmosphere
The respiratory system
The path taken by blood through the circulatory system coming back from the body and how it gets back to there again
Right atrium, Right ventricle, then to lungs to pick up oxygen, then back to Left atrium, Left ventricle, then out through the aorta (artery) to take oxygen to body
The side of the heart that pumps oxygen poor (deoxygenated) blood to the lungs
The right side
Reason that the small intestine is lined by millions of tiny skin folds called Villi that have even tinier microvilli on them
To increase surface area and absorb digested food liquid much faster
The 2 different organs that remove our two main waste products from the blood
The kidneys and lungs
System that breaks down complex food into simple chemicals called nutrients to provide energy and building materials for cells.
The digestive system
Difference between arteries, veins and capillaries
Arteries carry blood away from the heart, veins carry blood to the heart, and capillaries take nutrients and oxygen to all the cells/carry wastes away
Side of the heart that pumps oxygen rich blood to the body
The left side of the heart
Reason that people eat food
Food provides energy and building blocks for cell function and maintenance
Name of the organs and tubes that are part of the excretory system
The kidneys and 2 ureters ('sewers'), and the bladder and urethra
Small parts of a cell found inside that do particular jobs
Organelles
Function of the red blood cells and how they do it
To carry oxygen from the lungs to the cells - carried by the red pigment called haemoglobin
Name of the gas/air sacs in the lungs that allow for gas exchange
Alveoli
Place where water is removed in the digestive system
The large intestine
Way that the kidneys work
Blood passes through capillaries in the kidneys. The waste materials pass from the blood into the tubes in the kidneys. The waste materials and some water makes urine, which flows into the bladder. The urine is eliminated from the bladder as needed.
