This organ stores food, uses acid and enzymes, in order to break down food
The Stomach
What is Mechanical Digestion?
Involves chewing food into smaller pieces using the teeth and tongue.
A condition where bowel movements are infrequent, difficult, or incomplete is:
Constipation
How much bile does our liver produce daily?
1 Quart
How many permanent teeth does the adult human body have?
32.
The Epiglottis
What is Peristalsis?
A wave-like contraction to push food down to the stomach.
Distorted or scarred liver tissue due to chronic inflammation
Cirrhosis of the Liver
How long is our Gallbladder?
About 7-10 cm long.
What are the digestive process?
Ingestion
Digestion
Absorption
Defecation
This organ produces bile to help break down fats
The Liver
What is Chyme?
The thin liquid that is created due to when food mixes with gastric liquid.
Crystallization of bile in the gallbladder & can block the bile duct causing intense pain:
Cholelithiasis (Gall Stones)
What is digestion?
The breakdown of food so that its nutrients can be used by the body for:
Energy
Growth
Cell repair
What substances can be absorbed through the stomach wall? (Name at least 3)
water
weak glucose concentrations
electrolytes
certain drugs (aspirin)
alcohol
This organ completes the digestion of food and absorb over 90% of available nutrients and water into the bloodstream
The Small Intestine
What is Mucus?
A slippery, viscous secretion that protects the stomach mucosa from the acidic environment.
Inflammation of the liver & can be caused by viruses, drugs, and certain chemicals including steroids and alcohol.
Hepatitis
Describe the difference between mechanical and chemical digestion, and provide an example of where each occurs in the mouth.
Name the pathway that food takes from beginning to end.
Mouth, Esophagus, Stomach, Small Intestine, Large Intestine
What is Lysozyme?
An enzyme that destroys bacteria in the mouth.
Part of the intestine protrudes through a weak point or tear in the abdominal wall. This protrusion creates a bulge which can be painful.
Inguinal Hernia
The lining of the small intestine is covered in millions of microscopic, finger-like projections. What are these structures called, and what is their function?
They are called villi (and microvilli). Their function is to significantly increase the surface area of the small intestine, which maximizes the absorption of nutrients into the bloodstream.
Name all three sections of the Small Intestine in order.
Duodenum, Jejunum, and Ileum.
