Define rotation
The spinning of the Earth on its axis.
100
Define revolution.
Revolution is the movement of the Earth around the Sun.
100
What two factors are responsible for the creation of the seasons?
The tilt of the Earth's axis and the revolution of the Earth around the Sun.
100

In the morning, your shadow is in the west because the sunrises in the _______________

East

100

the imaginary line that Earth rotates on

axis

200
Which way does the Earth rotate.
Counter-clockwise
200
In science terms, what is a year?
A year is the time that it takes to revolve around the Sun once.
200

When the Earth's position is in a spot where the northern hemisphere is tilted toward the sun, what season is it?

Summer

200

In the late afternoon, your shadow is in the East because the sun sets in the ______________

west

200

The elliptical path that Earth takes as it revolves around the sun

orbit

300

What percent (or fraction) of the Earth is always in daylight and what percent is in dark (night)

50-50 or half and half

300

The Earth's revolution is actually about 365.25 days. How do we account for this extra bit every four years?

Leap day, Feb 29th

300
What season is it in the Northern Hemisphere when it is spring in the Southern Hemisphere?
Fall
300

At what time of day will your shadow be the shortest? At what TWO times of day will your shadow be the longest?

midday= short

sunrise and sunset= long

300

The four cardinal directions are...

North, South, East, and West

400
In science terms, what is a day?
A day is the time it takes the Earth to rotate once around its axis.
400
What shape is the Earth's orbit.
Ellipse
400
During which season is there the longest days? Why are days longest then?
Day length is the longest during the summer. Days are longest then because the Earth is tilted towards the Sun.
400

If you looked at your shadow at the same time of day in winter and in summer, your shadow would be _________ in summer than it is in winter. Why?

shorter, because the sun is lower in the sky in winter, even at midday, and so the shadows would be longer than in summer.

400

Explain the difference between rotation and revolution

Rotation the Earth does not change position, but spins on it's axis. Revolution is the Earth moving (changing position), as it orbits around the sun.

500
How are day and night created?
When the Earth rotates around it axis, the half of the Earth that is facing the Sun is in day and the half that not facing the Sun is in night.
500
Compare the Earth and Moon's revolutions. Include information about what they are revolving around and how long the revolution takes.
Earth: revolves around the Sun and it takes 365 days. Moon: revolves around the Moon and it takes 28 days.
500
If the Earth's axis was straight up and down, how would the seasons be different?
Seasons would not really exist. All areas of the Earth would have similar climates.
500

You are walking in the park. Your shadow is long and in the East. What time of day is it? How do you know?

If your shadow is long and in the East, then the sun must be low in the West, so it is late afternoon

500

Imagine the Earth rotates north to south (instead of east-west). a) How would night and day be the same as they are currently? b) How would night and day be different than they are currently?

a) similar hours of day and night b) the sun would rise and set in the north and south
